Jane Hagerty Obituary

We sadly mourn the loss of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Jane A. (Casatelli) Hagerty, who passed away peacefully, after a courageous struggle with illness, on Saturday, February 17, 2024.

Jane was born in Utica, on August 27, 1946, the youngest of three daughters, to Dewey and Helen (Sczesny) Casatelli. She grew up in a loving and nurturing home with a cherished mother who was as warm as the cookies she baked, and a Police Captain father who provided an excellent role model for consistent good conduct.

Jane graduated early from Wetmore and went on to Proctor High School, where she was highly involved in many academic, service and leadership groups while also captaining the cheerleading squad. Jane continued her education at SUNY Oswego, receiving her Batchelor’s in Elementary Education in 1968. She also took many graduate courses there, as well as at SUNY Cortland.

Jane met Thomas H. Hagerty on campus, while they were both pursuing graduate degrees at SUNY Oswego. Two years later, they were joined in a loving marriage which was full of devotion to each other and their family for the remaining 53 years of her life.

Jane was a faithful member of both St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church, in Utica, as well as St. Paul’s Church in Whitesboro. She was a teacher at Myles Elementary in New Hartford for over 30 years, where she was deeply appreciated by the hundreds of families whose lives she touched. Jane selflessly dedicated her life to caring for others, whether in the classroom, at home with her own children, or in the community. She volunteered with Stonecroft Bible Study, the St. Luke’s Neo-Natal unit, Meals on Wheels, Cub Scouts, N.H.T.A as a union officer, and the New Hartford School District as the Benefit Trust Chairperson. She mastered all of these things while raising three sons who brought her great pride.

Jane achieved a mother’s dream, and quietly took her last breath with her family at her bedside, and a prideful smile on her face.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Tom; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Michelle Hagerty of Topsfield, MA, Mark Hagerty and Deanna Peters of Waxhaw, NC, and Adam and Abby Hagerty of Deerfield, NY; adored grandchildren, Evan, Noah, Brooke, Collin, Leo and Ana Hagerty; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lynn and Andres Cardones of Conway, SC, William and Lucy Hagerty of Portsmouth, NH, and George and Marguerite Hagerty of Queensbury, NY; and also many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, with an especially close relationship to Michele Goldberg and Billy Brittelli. She was predeceased by her two sisters and brothers-in-law, Angela and Anthony Andreone, and Alberta and William Brittelli.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, March 2 , at 10 a.m., at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church, in Utica. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of mass.
