Frank N. Balzano

Mr. Frank N. “Hank” Balzano, 87, retired Utica Postmaster, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 19, 2010 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare.

Frank was born in Utica, September 6, 1922, a son of Senatro “Michael” and Felicia (Micucci) Balzano. He was educated in local schools and a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School. Following high school, Frank served in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. On August 2, 1947, Frank was joined in marriage to Victoria M. Fiore. Frank and Vicki have shared a marriage filled with love and devotion to each other for over sixty-two years.

Frank continued his education attending MVCC, Utica College, Virginia University and the Postal Training and Development Institute.

In July of 1948, he began a career with the US Postal Service in Utica, NY as a mail carrier. Frank retired after forty years of service as the Postmaster/Sectional Center Manager of the Utica Post Office, where he received numerous awards and honors. His job also encompassed the guidance and administration for 129 affiliate post offices.

Mr. Balzano was involved in many community organizations including the Utica Boys and Girls Club, the Utica College Alumni, several local and national postal organizations; he was a reading program volunteer for the Utica City Schools and for over twenty years the treasurer for Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito. An avid golfer and member of the Valley View Golf Association, Frank will be deeply missed by his buddies in “The Golf Gang”.

A devoted family man, whose life revolved around his wife, daughter and grandchildren, Frank and his wife never missed any event involving the kids.

He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife, Vicki; his daughter and son-in-law, Judianne and Richard R. Smith; his adored grandchildren, Justin, Matthew and Adrienne Smith; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Antoinette “Toni” and Ben Turi; nieces and nephews, Bernadette and Tom Clark, Maryrose and Dan Behan, Bernie and Carol Turi and Ro Ann Destito; and also many great nieces, great nephews, and in-laws, Ronald and Theresa Smith and family. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Katherine “Kate” Balzano, and his good friend, Michael Castellano.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. There are no calling hours. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of mass.

In memory of Frank N. Balzano, please consider donations to a scholarship fund which will be established in his name for Notre Dame High School and the Stevens Swan Humane Society. Donations may be made at the church.

Vicky, Judianne, Richard, Justin, Matthew & Adrienne…… I can’t even begin to express how sorry I am. Hank was one of the greatest… There are very few important moments in my life to where I cannot remember he and Vicky being a part of. He always brought a smile to my face and he will always be very close to my heart… Thank you for sharing him with me and my family for all these years……… Love you, Hank, give my dad a big hug and watch out for all the dewdrops up there… “ da da de da da da da... ”

Mrs. Balzano, I am so very saddened to learn of Frank's passing. He was a tutor for us at Albny School for many years along with his buddy Lou Critelli. I always looked forward to seeing him on Tuesdays! I will miss him terribly as will the students who were fortunate to work with him.
