Mr. Joseph Sharkey, 88, of 1007 James St., passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 after a long illness at the Masonic Care Community.

Joe was born on Veteran's Day, November 11, 1921, a son of Charles and Rose (Ajaia) Sharkey. He lived all his life in Utica, where he attended grammar school and graduated from Proctor High School in 1940. As a young man, Joe supported his family during the Depression, after his father's early passing. During high school, Joe was involved in track and met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Maryrose Motta. The couple married in 1944. Joe and Maryrose shared a long and happy marriage until her death from cancer early in 1976. Joe was self-employed and started his own business, Sharkey's Dry Goods, where he sold clothing and home furnishings for 47 years, establishing many longtime customers and friends.

For thirty years, Mr. Sharkey had the largest newspaper stand in the city at Historic Old St. John’s Church. He was an active bowler in the Utica area for many years establishing himself as one of its top bowlers and was inducted into the Utica Bowling Hall of Fame in 2001. His teams won numerous championships. Joe was a long time member of the Syrian American Club and involved in many of their functions.

He is survived by his three children, Charles Sharkey and his fiancé, Patricia Wolfe, Anthony Sharkey and his wife, Marsha, and Joanne and her husband, George Giuliano; his six grandchildren, Jennifer Ortiz, Michael, Matthew and Kathleen Sharkey, and Stefanie and Sheri Recco; longtime companion, Sylvia Mauro; and also two great grandchildren, Brynn and Dylan Stangarone.

His funeral will be held on Saturday at 8 a.m. from The Matt Funeral Home and at 9 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St., in Utica.

The family would like to offer their thanks to the staff of the Woodgate Community of the Masonic Home for all the care and compassion shown to dad during his stay. In recognition of this, please consider donations to the Masonic Care Community.

To the family of Mr. Joseph Sharkey, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Sharkey through a medical office that I had worked at. He was ALWAYS smiling and was always quick with a joke. I looked forward to seeing him come in for his appointments because he always made me smile. I always spent a little extra time with him to make him feel, as he would tell me, Super Special. I am so sorry for your loss, but I will always keep the memories of Mr. Sharkey close to my heart. He was a very special man.

Chuck, Shirley and I are so sorry to hear of your loss. He sounded like a wonderful man and Father as well as a parent who raised a wonderful son, in you. Life continues on for him, only he is in the second inning of life's game while we still remain in the first. Best wishes and blessings.

My deepest sympathy to the Sharkey family. I knew Joe for a very long time and he was a great man. Joe used to come to my house with his business and always made sure i got whatever i needed. I also always kept the Christmas cards that Joe always sent up till just a few years ago. He was a good man and you all should be proud of him. You are all in my prayers.

PLEASE ACCEPT MY CONDOLENCES. ALTHOUGH IT HAS BEEN MANY YEARS SINCE I LAST SEEN JOE, I WILL NEVER FORGET HIS KINDNESS TO MY FAMILY WHEN WE WERE GROWING UP. IF IT WERE NOT FOR JOE LETTING US "PUT IT ON THE BOOK" THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN MANY HOLIDAYS AND START OF A SCHOOL YEAR THAT WE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD NEW CLOTHES TO WEAR.I CAN REMEMBER HIS FAMOUS WORDS "DON'T WORRY, YOU CAN PAY ME LATER'. yOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE.

I have many fond memories of my Uncle Joe. He loved to play cards, cook (well, maybe eat, I think someone else usually did the cooking) and he never forgot a birthday or graduation or other special event. He was always laughing and a very happy and he will be greatly missed. Stephanie Pianka (New York, NY)

Please accept my deepest sympathy. The best testiment to Joseph, the father, has to be the generous love of his son, Tony. That love has meant so much to young people inside and outside his family.

Our dear friends Joanne and George, often in times like these, solemn silence and a warm touch convey all that's needed. No human words can express the waves of feelings that hit us: sadness, fear of the unknown, uncertainty, regret, regret of the words never spoken and of the words spoken that should not have been uttered, memories, memories, memories, good and bad, golden and rotten and plain simple memories of little things, words, sounds, smells, touches, scenes of childhood, minutes, seconds, hours spent together, heartfelt prayers, love, gratitude, sorrow, relief entangled with anxiety, reflections, thoughts and prayers again...and most and the most precious of all, HOPE.... Having to resort to words, please accept our deepest sympathies. We are with you in prayer and in spirit. Love, Viktor and Iryna

To the family of Mr. Sharkey, especially Joanne: My mother was a customer and "Sharkey" as he was called was always at our house. When my sisters and I would come home from school we'd say "Sharkey" is there. He was a truly nice man. I am sorry for your loss.
