Mrs. Shirley Ann (Hahn) Esposito, age 86, passed away with her loving children by her side on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center.
Shirley was born in Utica on November 27, 1925, a daughter of the late Ralph and Florence (Pelaw) Hahn. She was educated in local schools and a graduate of Utica Free Academy; and later attended MVCC. On November 20, 1948, Shirley was joined in marriage to Edward A. Esposito. Ed and Shirley lived in the Utica area for many years, as well as several years in California. They enjoyed fifty-nine loving years together until Ed’s passing on January 30, 2007.
Mrs. Esposito worked in several accounting offices throughout the area. For many years she held a position with the New York Power Authority within its scheduling department from which she retired.
Shirley had a great enthusiasm for life and her friends. She was an artist and painter with a life-long passion for the arts. She enjoyed yoga, swimming and was an avid reader, especially of philosophy. Shirley was an active member of the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute, where she volunteered in the art shop. For over twelve years, she was a member of the Rescue Mission Auxiliary. Her other memberships included the Red Hat Society, the Mothers Club at Historic Old St. John’s Church, the Utica Art Association, and she was a parishioner of Historic Old St. John’s Church, where she attended Mass daily.
A very loving mother and grandmother, she will be sadly missed by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Caprice and John Kleaka, and Lisa and David Philipson; her son, Edward Esposito and his special friend Barb; her grandchildren, Forrest and Amy Kleaka, John and Kim Kleaka, Nicolas Bonfardice and his friend, Erica, and Edward, Alyssa, and Matthew Esposito; great-grandchildren, Brynne, Taryn, and Emerson Kleaka, and Anthony, Mykal, Aaron, Chazz, Gage, and Trinity; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins; including Eleanor and Norbert Kula; a sister-in-law, Una Hahn; and many special friends including, Kathy B., Nicole, Terri, Eleanor, Shirley D., Nancy, and her friends at the Red Hat Society. She was predeceased by her brother, William Hahn.
In keeping with Mrs. Esposito’s wishes there will be no visitation. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 10:30 at Historic Old St. John’s Church. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The family will receive visitors in church at the conclusion of services.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the I.C.U. nurses and staff at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center for the care and compassion displayed to Shirley throughout her stay there. The special attention and care shown by Dr. Kenneth Murphy will always be remembered.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be considered to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Envelopes will be available in the vestibule of church the morning of Mrs. Esposito’s funeral service. |

I was very sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She was always smiling when she came to the library and so full of life. She was very nice to my mother at Sitrin in 2005 when my mother was there recovering from a stroke and your mother had knee surgery. I know she will be dearly missed.
Take care,
Rosemary/Dunham Library
