John F. Romanelli, 85, of New Hartford, died peacefully at home on Sunday, June 17, 2012.

Born on April 27, 1927, in Utica, NY, John was the son of the late Antonio and Adeline Desimone Romanelli. He attended local schools and served in the Navy during World War II. John went on to earn his degree from Broome County Community College after the war.

On June 14, 1958, he was united in marriage with the late Mary Louise (Sweet); a 50 year union until her passing on November 28, 2008.

He was employed as a Tool and Die foreman at Kelsey Hayes for 32 years. Gifted with a natural teaching ability, he then shared that knowledge with the next generation of metal workers as an instructor at BOCES after his retirement from Kelsey Hayes.

John also had a lifelong love of woodworking and design. He built his home, his brother’s home and many pieces of furniture for his children and beloved grandchildren.

Family was the most important thing to John. He was everyone’s rock and could always be counted on by whoever was in need. From his parents, to his in-laws, to his years as best babysitter for his grandchildren, and most recently as the primary caregiver for his wife, Mary Lou, in her final years, he was dedicated and devoted. He would never say no. He would always find a way to do what had to be done.

His great passion was golf and he spent many happy hours at Pine Hills Golf Course. His golf buddies were his extended family, especially his longtime cart-mate, Joe Artessa. One of his most memorable moments occurred just two summers ago when he scored a hole in one while playing golf with his two daughters and four grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughters, Susan Romanelli and her husband, George LaVenture of Marlborough, MA, and Kathy and her husband, Steve Hartnett of Whitesboro; grandchildren, David LaVenture of Manhattan, Brendan Hartnett of Lenox, MA, and Ryan and Erin Hartnett of Whitesboro; brothers, Vincent Romanelli and his wife, Virginia, and Joseph Romanelli; sister, Ida Bottaro; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, as well as, his brothers, Patsy and Frank, and his sister, Mary Buehler.

Friends and family are invited to attend his service at Pine Hills Golf Course, 247 Jones Road, Frankfort at 11a.m. on Wednesday, June 20th (Golf attire optional). The family will receive visitors from 10 to 11 a.m. at the club house. Private interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements are with Matt Funeral Home of Utica.

Susan and family you are in our thoughts and prayers. Your father sounded like a wonderful man who will be missed by many. I wished I could have played a round of golf with him!

I can;t believe you still haven't opeend ones from Ukraine! I've got them for you at least 4 years ago! What a patience! I would open all of them in 1 day (probably in less them 30 min) and eat all the chocolates!
