Mr. Carl L. “Buzz” Nelson, 78, a beloved local artist and master craftsman, passed away peacefully June 20, 2025, at Wynn Hospital in Utica.
Carl was born September 23, 1946, in Utica, NY, a son of the late Carl and Alice (LeBaron) Nelson. He was raised and educated locally and a graduate of Whitesboro High School. Carl was a lifelong native of Utica, where he spent his life building a legacy rich in creativity, family, and community. He was once joined in marriage to Janice Lago, with whom he shared over ten years and his two daughters.
Carl’s artistic passion found its expression through wood and other media, establishing him as a respected local sculptor. Alongside his art, he worked for many years as a skilled carpenter and contractor, leaving behind a body of craftsmanship admired by many.
A graduate of Mohawk Valley Community College, Carl was known for his light-hearted warm nature, sense of humor, kindness, and generosity which touched everyone who knew him. He took great pride in his daughters and grandchildren. One of his lifelong passions, restoring classic cars, was a hobby that reflected his love for craftsmanship and attention to detail.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Jamey and Steve Bubb, and Kathryn and Tom Evans; grandchildren, Ethan and Michael Bubb, and Abigail Evans; siblings, Judy White of Crescent City, FL, Richard Nelson of Maryville, TN, Anthony Nelson of West Hills, CA, and Peter Nelson of Apollo Beach, FL, and Clinton, NY; and also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
The family wishes to thank the compassionate staff at Wynn Hospital for the care of Carl.
