Mrs. Elena B. Fimmano, age 98, of Gravesville, NY, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, January 20, 2021.
She was born in Utica, NY, November 11, 1922, to Bernard A. and Josephine M. (Perretta) Benincasa. Upon graduating from Proctor High School, in Utica, she attended St. Lawrence University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and later, Syracuse University, where she earned a Masters degree in Education.
Her love of young children blossomed into an elementary school teaching career that spanned three decades. Elena taught first grade and kindergarten classes at both Barneveld Central and Poland Central School Districts. She was very proud of the fact that many of her students sought her out later in life to thank her for providing them with a wonderful foundation for learning.
When she wasn't teaching her second love was gardening. Her gardens at her home in Gravesville were a sight to see. She also canned and pickled enough berries and vegetables every year to keep the cellar pantry filled to the brim, while her homemade cherry pies were always a family favorite.
Elena is predeceased by her husband, Ralph A.C. Fimmano, of Gravesville, NY; her sister, Bernice A. Zasa, of Phoenix, AZ; and her daughter-in-law Teisha L. Fimmano, of Corning, NY. She is survived by her son, John H. Fimmano, of Corning, NY; granddaughter, Gina (Matthew) Pfleegor and great granddaughter, Emma Pfleegor, all of Corning, NY; and grandson, Julian (Lisa) Washio-Collette, of Big Sur, CA.
A private mass for her immediate family will be held at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish, in Utica, with interment in St. Agnes Cemetery.
In lieu of cards or flowers, please consider a donation in Elena's name for Alzheimer's and Dementia research at a charity of your choice.
