Ernest "Ernie" Massa

Mr. Ernest “Ernie” Massa, 64, passed away unexpectedly, Monday, October 23, 2023, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center.

Ernie was born in Utica, November 19, 1958. He was predeceased by his father, Mario P. Massa Jr.; grandparents, Agatha and Mario Massa Sr.; uncle, John (Cecelia Sanborn) Massa; and aunt and uncle, Dolores and Joseph “Peppy” Massa.

Ernie is survived by his mother, Jeanne (Steven) Szalach; his siblings, Jean Pupa, John (Wendy) Gaspa III, John Massa, and Maria Massa; cousins, Joseph Massa, Colleen and Mario Massa, and Gina and Jim Palmer; and also many nieces and nephews.
A lifelong Utican, Ernie was educated in local schools. He worked for a short time with his father and brother in the asbestos removal industry. Most of his working career was in various restaurants throughout the city of Utica. He most recently worked at Bossone's Sausage and Meat, on Bleecker St., and could be seen almost daily at the original O’Scugnizzo Pizzeria.
 

A die-hard NY Yankees fan, Ernie enjoyed the simple things in life, such as spending time with friends and family. A favorite event was his annual trip to Fort Edward, for the "Float and Feast" family get-together, hosted by Colleen and Mario. Ernie was proud of the fact that he had perfect attendance to this event and was a proud member of The Fort Edward Sons of the American Legion.
 

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Randy Crouse, a lifetime friend, who always looked out for Ernie, especially through his final days, and his friend, Al Baker, who was always there to give Ernie a ride. Another thank you to Mr. Rick Caruso, who took a shine to Ernie, as a young boy, and always made sure he had a little extra walking around money.
 

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Ernie's Mass of Christian Burial, Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. He will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.
