James Altamuro Obituary

James E. Altamuro, 81, passed away, with his loving family by his side, after a long illness, Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at the Wynn Hospital.

Jimmy was born in Herkimer, NY, March 2, 1944, the youngest of eleven children to Frank and Rocca (Buttigleone) Altamuro. He was educated in Herkimer schools and a graduate of Herkimer Senior High School.

On March 7, 1970, Jimmy was joined in marriage to the former Louise A. Palleschi and they have shared over fifty years of marriage, living and raising their beloved family in Utica.

As a young man, Jim was a mason and skilled bricklayer and worked on projects throughout the state for Winkleman Construction, including, the Route 87 Northway and locally Perretta Twin Towers in Utica.

He later operated Jimmy’s Stuffed Shirt Restaurant on South Main Street in Herkimer for over twenty years where no one ever went hungry, whether they had money or not.

Along with the running the restaurant, Jimmy also worked at DiSpirito Lumber in Solvay, NY for ten years.

Always good with numbers, he loved games of chance and always enjoyed the casinos. He was employed at the Turning Stone Casino and eventually moved on to the Mohegan Sun in CT, for over eight years as a dealer and floor supervisor, a job he was very proud of and truly enjoyed.

A hard worker, Jimmy always provided for his family will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Louise; his son, Gabriel Altamuro and his girlfriend, Shannon Holtslag; adored grandsons, Gabriel Giani and Matthew Peter Altamuro; sister, Mary Jane Moschelle; brother-in-laws and sister-in-law, Peter Palleschi, and Annie and Mark Vallese; and also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, especially his nephew, David Altamuro; Godchild, Tiffany Temple; cousin, Joe Palumbo; and longtime friends, Ralph Franco, Sal Bosco, and Pat Gatto, as well as, many members of the Tangorra family.

He was predeceased by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Peter and Rossa Palleschi; and nine brothers and sisters.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Private entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum.

There will be an opportunity to greet the family following mass.

The family would like to offer their deepest thanks to Jimmy’s doctors, Dr. Fleischer, Dr. Goldberg, and Dr. Buttala and their staffs, as well a, the staff of the WYNN Hospital, 8th Floor, and ICU, for the loving care shown to Jimmy during his illness.
