John Louis Rugari, 91, of Utica, the Patriarch of our family, passed away peacefully, at home with his family by his side, Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026.
John was born in Utica, November 8, 1934, a son of the late Luigi and Maria (Labozzetta) Rugari. He was educated in local schools and a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School.
On April 27, 1956, John was joined in marriage to the former Maria Zumbo. John and Maria shared over sixty-seven loving years, devoted to each other in every way. His beloved Maria passed away on January 9, 2023.
John was a produce man and held the position of produce manager for Chicago Markets for over thirty-five years.
The total family man, John was dedicated to them in every way. He was a handyman and maintained everything around the house. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t jump into, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and gardening, which was his favorite pastime and where he loved spending time. His family was everything to him, everyone was always welcome to his home, and he always enjoyed bringing in new members. A strong presence in everyone’s life, he will truly be missed.
He is survived by his children, Louis and Fran Rugari of CA, Diana (Rugari) DeFazio, and Lina (Rugari) and Robert Parkhurst, all of Utica, and John and Hollie Rugari of NC; beloved grandchildren, Ariana Rugari, Vanessa DeFazio, Allyson (Evan) Yacowenia, Evan Dovigh, Matthew Rugari, and Nicole (Cory) Law; great grandchildren, Emma, Kendall, Cayden, Aurie, Parker, Leah, and Angelo; brothers and sisters-in-law, Louis and Camille Rugari, Joseph and Mary Rugari, and Frank and Susan Rugari; sisters-in-law, Janet Rugari and Franca Sicari; and brother-in-law, John Zumbo; and also many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother, Anthony Rugari; and his sisters and brothers-in-law, Sophia and Thomas Godward, Theresa “Terry” Houchin, and Anthony Zumbo.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 10 a.m., at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Whitesboro. Entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum.
