Mr. Lamar A. Mitchell Sr., 73, passed away peacefully, Thursday, May 26, 2022, at the Colonial Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Rome, NY.
Lamar was born in Sandersville, GA, April 25, 1949, a son of the late Arthur Mitchell and Rosa Minerva Collins. His family later moved to Utica, where he was raised and educated. After high school, Lamar attended MVCC, where he received an Associates Degree in Engineering. He was employed at Remington Firearms in Ilion, where he held many different jobs throughout the years. Lamar served in the Army National Guard Reserves from 1979-1981.
On December 14, 1968, Lamar was joined in marriage to the late Donna Mae Williams, and from that union shared four children. Other than spending time with family, Lamar was an avid fisherman and enjoyed time on Morraine Lake and liked to “test his luck”, as he would say, whether it be at the casino or on scratch off lotto.
He is survived by four children, Tara Rios, Lamar Jr. and Zulma Mitchell, Michelle Mitchell, and Andrew Mitchell; grandchildren, Sierra, Alyssa, and Isabella Rios, Aliyah Thompson, Adam, Aollani, and Elijah Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Gianna and Asteria Rios, Zamari, Le’onna, and Zayanna Moore; brothers, Leonard Mitchell, Thomas Wright, Oscar Lee, and George Collins; sister, Barbara Collins. Lamar was predeceased by brother, Milton Collins; and sisters, Shirley Mitchell and Rosa Lee King.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Wednesday, June 1, from 5-7 p.m., at the Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St., Utica. Lamar’s Celebration of Life will be 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The family would like to thank the staff of Colonial Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Home for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
