Leonard Amico Obituary

Mr. Leonard C. Amico, 96, passed away peacefully with his loved ones by his side on Friday, January 2, 2015 at The Masonic Care Community. Leonard was born in Utica on September 29, 1918, a son of Peter and Josephine (Giannino) Amico. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. Mr. Amico served our country in the US Army Air Force during WWII. On September 4, 1948, Leonard was joined in marriage to the former Mary Gattuso. Leonard and Mary shared sixty-one loving years together, until her passing on October 21, 2009. Mr. Amico was employed as a clerk in the control tower of Griffiss Air Force Base for many years. He also worked for several years as a waiter at Twin Ponds and also as a bartender at the Moose Lodge, where he was a longtime member. In younger years, Leonard was an avid bowler and had belonged to American Legion Post 229. A very loving family man, Leonard is survived by his two beloved daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Anne and Gerald Schavone, and Joseanne and Tony Esper, all of Utica; his son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Colleen Amico of Powhaten, VA; grandchildren, Gerald and Nicole Schavone, Sheri and Peter Podagrosi, Mary and Brett Brewer, Jennifer and Michael Tebsherany, Jessica Esper and Alyssa Amico, Peter and Leah Amico, and Joseph Amico; seven great grandchildren, Angelo and Salvi Podagrosi, Natalie and Charlotte Brewer, Haley Waldron, Ryan Schavone, and Kaitlin Church; one sister, Alice Gerace; one brother-in-law, John Loperfido; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Josephine Anne; and one brother, Sal Amico; and an infant sister, Antoinette. His Funeral will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. from the Matt Funeral Home and at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish, where his Mass of Christian Burial with Military Honors will be celebrated. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St., Utica. The family would like to send their heartfelt thanks to the Masonic Care Community, especially the Monroe Unit, for the loving and compassionate care shown to their dad during his stay there.
