Marian T. Abess, 90, a lifetime resident of New York Mills, and presently a resident of the Sycamore House at Sitrin Health Care Center, passed away with her loving sister by her side on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Marian was born in New York Mills, NY, on April 20, 1926, a daughter of the late Nahmie and Annece (Coury) Abess. She attended New York Mills Schools and was always very proud of the fact that she had perfect attendance right up until graduation. Following high school, Marian went to beauty school and became a self-employed beautician, along with her sister, Jamal. They operated Jamal's Beauty Salon in the Winston Building in downtown Utica for over twenty-five years. She was a strong woman of faith; a communicant of St. Louis Gonzaga Church where she sang in the church choir; and a member of the St. Mary's Guild. The most recent memorable moment for Marian was being able to attend mass on Mother's Day, where she was able to speak and reminisce with many friends and family members. A loving sister and aunt, she is survived by her sister, Jeannine Hanna of New Hartford; and was a second mother to all of the Hanna children and grandchildren. She leaves many nieces and nephews, and their families, who she held dear to her heart. She was predeceased by her sister, Jamal Rukavena; and two brothers, Frederick and Harry Abess. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Divine Liturgy of the Faithful Departed on Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Louis Gonzaga Church, offered by Chor-Bishop John Faris, Pastor. In keeping with Marian's wishes there are no calling hours. Private interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. The family would like to thank Chorbishop John D. Faris, Father Bassam Saade, Father Joseph Daiif, Father Alaa Issa, and Deacons Paul Salamy and Peter Hobaica, for their spiritual guidance and visits to Marian; also the staff of Sitrin Healthcare for the kindness and care given to Marian, as well as, the staff of St. Elizabeth's Medical Center for making her comfortable in her final days.
