Mary Ann (Hobaica) Giruzzi, 86, passed away peacefully, with loving family by her side on Monday, May 25, 2026, at the St. Luke’s Home of MVHS.
Mary Ann was born in Utica, May 22, 1940, a daughter of the late Moses G. and Helen (George) Hobaica. She was educated at Roscoe Conkling School and a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School.
On November 5, 1960, Mary Ann was joined in marriage to the love of her life, Rocco F. Giruzzi, Jr. They shared almost sixty loving years of marriage. Always a very close and loving couple, they were rarely seen apart from each other and loved to travel to Florida every winter and spend time with family and friends. Mary Ann and Rocco enjoyed social gatherings, and everyone loved to watch them light up the dance floor. Her beloved Rock passed away on May 10, 2020.
At one time, Mary Ann worked for New York Telephone, where she made many longtime friends. She later worked alongside her husband at the family business, Fort Schuyler Drug Co., on Bleecker Street, and later at Emdin’s Pharmacy, in the King Cole Plaza. Mary Ann also ran the Toy Barn on Mohawk St. for many years.
Mary Ann enjoyed spending time at the Yahnundasis Golf Club, where she enjoyed golfing and also loved playing Dominoes with the girls.
She is survived by her three children, Rocco F. III and Laura Giruzzi, Pamela Giruzzi Zegarelli and Mark Pensero, and William “Billy” and Lisa Giruzzi; grandchildren, Dr. Nicholas Giruzzi and Dr. Megan Giruzzi, Christopher Giruzzi, Zachary and Keaton Zegarelli, and Dr. Carly Zegarelli; great grandchildren, Alayna Giruzzi, Gabriel Giruzzi, Elijah Giruzzi, Tatum Zegarelli, and Colt Jameson Giruzzi; a brother-in-law, Ferdinand “Freddy” Schwenzfeier; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Nicholas F. Giruzzi; her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Robert and Doris Hobaica; sisters and brother-in-law, Nancy and Al Cordovani, and Elaine Schwenzfeier; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Rocco F. Sr. and Carmella Giruzzi; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law , Kay and Bruno Arcuri.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, May 30, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/ Blessed Sacrament Parish. Interment beside her husband Rocco will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.
Calling hours are on Friday, May 29, from 5 to 7 p.m., at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St., Utica.
