Ms. Ollie Mae Hurd, 96, passed away peacefully, with the love of family in her heart, on Friday, January 8, 2021, at the Pines, Utica.
Ollie Mae was born on February 29, 1924, in Sardis, MI, to her loving parents, Joseph C. and Ella Mae (Duncan) Hammond. Growing up, she lived on a farm where her parents worked as sharecroppers. She was educated in the south and settled in Utica many years ago. As an adult, Ollie was a machine operator and longtime employee of the Utica Cutlery Company. For many years she was a devoted Jehovah’s Witness and a member of the Highland and the Riverside Congregations. She spent much of her time participating in her volunteer work teaching others about the Bible. In her later years, she would reflect on her time volunteering and the smile on her face would grow from ear to ear.
Ollie Mae is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Jesse Cole, of Syracuse, Dolores Pulluaim and Norman Grant, of Utica; her son and two daughters-in-law, Zachary and Catherine Taylor and Melvina Pulluaim; her brother and sister-in-law, James and Mary Hammond, of California; and her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her two daughters and a son, Jean Holland, Rosemary Vandi and Jesse Pulluaim; and her siblings, Reola Scott, Johnnie Hammond, Henrietta Taylor and Willie Ann Glinton.
The family would like to thank the kind nurses on the third floor of the Pines, Utica, that took good care of Ms. Ollie for many years.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ollie’s family will honor her in a private online gathering with her family and the Riverside Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses on January, 23rd.
