Raymond James Barretta, 48, died unexpectedly as the result of a snowmobile accident on Thursday, February 5, 2015. Raymond was born in New Hartford, February 17, 1966, a son of Frank and the late Eleanor Scotellaro Barretta. After his mother's death, Ray was raised by his father and his stepmother the late Elsie Barretta. He was educated in New Hartford Schools, and graduated in 1984. Ray was employed as a Master Maintenance Mechanic at Hamilton College. On October 12, 1996, Ray was joined in marriage to the former Jacqueline Setrin. The couple has shared eighteen loving years together and devoted themselves to their son, Nicholas, who was Ray's pride and joy, best friend, and constant companion. Ray enjoyed many activities such as snowmobiling, four-wheeling and was a committed boater at Alexandria Bay, never missing a weekend when he could be at the Bay boating with his family and many friends. Ray is survived by his loving wife, Jackie Barretta of New Hartford; his adored son, Nick Barretta of New Hartford; son, Raymond Barretta Jr. of FL; father, Frank Barretta Sr., of New Hartford; two brothers, Frank Barretta Jr. and Dennis and Wendy Barretta; father-in-law, Morton Setrin; in-laws, Carmen Barretta, Jeffrey and Sue Setrin, and Judi and Larry Grau; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also predeceased by sister, Mary Barretta; and mother-in-law, Rose Setrin. Ray was not only a devoted husband, father, and son, but a great friend, and a great man. Ray's love of life was infectious and brought joy to all who spent time with him. "The Shed" was a favorite hangout during the fall and winter months. He will be missed by those who loved him including his close neighbors, family at the Wellelsey Island Marina and many friends too numerous to mention. His funeral will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church with interment in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, 2-4 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St., Utica. In honor of Ray's amazing commitment to his son, Nick, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a fund being set up for Nick's education.
