Richard D. Porter, 91, of Whitesboro, passed away with his loving family by his side, Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Masonic Care Community.
Dick was born in Utica, February 19, 1934, a son of the late Travis D. and Elizabeth Mildred (Reuben) Porter. He was educated in Utica schools and a 1952 graduate of TR Proctor High School.
On August 5, 1955, Dick was joined in marriage to the former Shirley Zida May of Canastota. Dick and Shirley shared over sixty-seven loving years of marriage, sharing many happy times with family, especially their adored grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Dick began working at Shepard Paint Co., in Utica, in 1952. He eventually, along with his partner, Joseph Carzo, bought the business in 1978. Joe eventually retired due to illness in 1986 and Dick, along with his wife, ran the business until its closing in 1993.
In retired years, Dick and Shirley enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Florida, and always loved spending time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his son, Richard D. “Dan” Porter of Miami; five grandchildren, Stacy A. Gadway, Richard D. Porter III, Travis L. Porter, Allison M. Reale, and Ashley M. Porter; great grandchildren, Sierra Gadway, Cody Gadway, Nicholas John Porter, Angelina Porter, Julian Reale, Kendall Reale, and Peyton Reale; brother, Leonard “Lenny” Porter; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley; and his son, Travis C. Porter.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 10 a.m., at St. Paul’s Church in Whitesboro. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with his beloved wife, Shirley.
Relatives and friends may call on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 5-7 p.m., at the Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk Street, Utica.
Dick’s family wish to thank the staff and residents at Masonic Care Community, especially Dina and Shakeema (who he lovingly called “Red”), for their care and companionship throughout the years.
