On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, God called home his loyal servant, Rosemarie (Suppa) Chiffy. On that day, she entered the Kingdom of Heaven and was reunited with her beloved parents, siblings, friends and the Blessed Mother, to whom she had a lifelong devotion. She was 98 years old and her loved ones were by her side.
Rosemarie was born in Utica, August 25, 1926, the first child of the late Joseph “Chick” and Magdalen (Rizzo) Suppa. She was educated at Mount Carmel Elementary School and was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School. She was part of “The Greatest Generation” and as she liked to say, it surely was the greatest. She was a secretary at the Central Kitchen of the Utica City School District for over 25 years. At one time, Rosemarie was married to the late Alexander Chiffy.
Rosemarie’s life revolved around her family, her God, and her church. She was a devoted and active parishioner of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church her entire life, as well as being President of the St. Anne Society, President of the Mount Carmel Society, a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and an organizer of outreach to nursing homes and hospitals. She was active in the church festival and anything and everything that happened at Mt. Carmel Church.
A woman of great faith, she will be sadly missed.
Among her favorite activities were her trips to the Dollar Tree where she spent many hours painstakingly choosing cards for her family and friends, and shopping at Boscovs and making sure everyone got something nice to wear. Most of all, she was grateful for the time spent with her cherished grandchildren. Helping to raise them was one of her life’s greatest gifts. She loved taking them with her on home visits, helping set up for the church festival, decorating the church for holidays and on her duties as Eucharistic Minister. She loved them, and everyone, with an unconditional love, much like the love God has for us. She lived her life in such a way as to exemplify the Christian virtues she believed in so fervently. She chose to see the best in everyone and as she often told others to do, she offered up her difficulties, and most recently, her health challenges, to God.
She is survived by her beloved children, son, Christopher Chiffy, her daughter and son-in-law, Maria and William Peycke; grandchildren, Sean Hogan, and Mia Peycke; sister, Carmelita Scotellaro; sister-in-laws, Theresa Suppa and Mary Lourdes Chiffy; brother-in-law, James DeAngelo; her Godchildren, Michael Suppa, Samuel Scotellaro, Anthony Suppa, Carol Clare, Theresa Ann Vella and Leo Dianetti, and many much beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins, including cousins Vickie Perritano, Carmel Piccola and Justine Furano.
She was predeceased by her two brothers and a sister-in-law, Francis and Sadie Suppa, and Salvatore Suppa; in-laws, Sam Scotellaro, Congetta DeAngelo, Frank Chiffy, and Carol Chiffy; nieces and nephews, Richard Chiffy, Joseph Suppa, Jean Marie Suppa, David DeAngelo, and Stephen Scotellaro; and great niece, Christine Suppa.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May 23, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Her service will be live streamed. https://www.facebook.com/ascensionvideo
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 22, 4 to 6 p.m., at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish, 648 Jay Street, Utica, NY.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sitrin Rehabilitation and Aspen House for their devoted care, everyone at the Advanced Wound Care on Middle Settlement Road, especially Mary Ellen Schrader, for her constant love and compassion, and the entire faith community of St. Mary of Mount Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish who have been wonderful friends to both Rosemarie and the entire family, especially during this very challenging time. Also, a special thank you to Ronnie and Laurie DeAngelo, Michael Suppa and Terri Panuccio, for always being there.
As Rosemarie would always say, “I’ll see you again, God willing.”
The family asks that if you would like to make a donation in her memory, to consider the St. Ann or Mount Carmel Society to assist them with their charitable works.
Arrangements are with The Matt Funeral Home, Utica.
