Mrs. Rosina Schirripa, 92, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, with the love of her family in her heart.
Rosina was born January 5, 1934, in Gioiosa Ionica, Provincia di Reggio Calabria, Italy, a daughter of the late Giuseppe and Maria Judita Commisso, and daughter-in-law to the late Tomasso and Marianna Schirripa. She was raised and educated in Italy and on August 7, 1954, she was united in holy matrimony to her one and only love, Natale Schirripa. Natale, predeceased her on November 22, 2007, at their home in Utica, where she cared for him throughout his illness, later in life, attending to his every need, as she did throughout their union.
Mrs. Schirripa was a seamstress by trade, and conquered every tailoring challenge any of her four boys would present to her. Rosina mastered her skills working over 32 years at the former Joseph & Feiss Co., in Utica, NY, a career that she was truly proud of and loved.
Rosina’s greatest gift was never having a thought for herself, but rather selflessly tending to the needs of her husband and four children, regardless of the toll it took on her both mentally and physically. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who never rested and never pushed for long vacations, but truly enjoyed going on short excursions with her husband and children and viewed her grandchildren as her little angels, who she cherished and loved unconditionally. She kept meticulous care of her home, inside and out, where so many would comment that you could eat off of the floor. Rosina loved planting flowers and tending to yard duties, which she did persistently until very recently. She never had a bad word to say about anyone, and had a trusting and welcoming disposition to strangers unless they showed it wasn’t warranted at which point she’d affectionately send them on a free trip to Naples. Rosina’s cooking was out of this world, and her baking skills never failed. Of all her wonderful gifts, a family and visitor favorite was a simple specially crafted stick type of sugar cookie that would disappear very shortly after reaching the kitchen table, every time. But just when everyone thought there were no more, she’d emerge with a new plate full that she had hidden away. Cooking was only one of the many great skills and attributes she had, ones that were honed and perfected over the long years of caring for her family.
Rosina is survived by her beloved four sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Christy of Newark, CA, Joseph (predeceased by Janet) of Raleigh, NC, Anthony Schirripa, and David and Silvana Schirripa, of Utica; eight grandchildren, Sergio, Alyssa (Dan Polonsky), Daniel, Anna (Juniper Breese), Anthony Jr. (Sarah), Matthew, Natale, and Reggina; and two great grandchildren Braden and Skylar. She also is survived by her sister, Theresa Prestia and sister-in-law, Carmella Commisso, both of Utica; and also many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins, whose visits always brightened her day. She is also survived by a special cousin, Judy Hogan of Clinton, NY, who would make frequent treks to Utica with her family to visit with Rosina, as they shared great food and stories.
She is predeceased by her brother, Rocco Commisso; and daughter-in-law, Janet Schirripa.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, January 15, 2026, at St. Mary of Mount Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Rosina’s family will greet visitors at the conclusion of mass. Entombment will take place in Calvary Mausoleum with her husband, Natale.
A special thank you is extended to the Abraham House, of Rome, NY, and Hospice and Palliative Care, whose care and attention allowed Rosina a peaceful journey to being reunited with her husband.
