Sebastian J. Mazzatti

Mr. Sebastian J. “Sam” Mazzatti, 96, passed away peacefully at the Siegenthaler Center of Hospice Care on Wednesday morning, May 18, 2005. Sam was born in Utica, September 3, 1908, a son of the late Augustine and Anna (Mazza) Mazzatti. He was educated in local schools. On October 17, 1931, Sam was joined in marriage to the former Rosemary Gentile. They shared a loving marriage for over fifty-nine years. Rosemary passed away on April 26, 1990. For over 30 years, Mr. Mazzatti was employed as a baggage handler at the NY Central Railroad. He later was employed many years as a tool room clerk at UNIVAC. After retirement, Sam worked several years as the Sexton at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church. During his retirement, Sam spent much of his time helping out his son at Gregorio’s Pizzaria. He was a longtime member of the Sons of Italy, the Loyal Order of Moose, the East Side and North Utica Senior Centers and the IAM Union. Sam was also an avid bingo player as well as a loyal wrestling and NY Mets fan. He is survived by his two sons and three daughters-in-law, Richard and Betty (Goodness) Mazzatti of Rochester, Gregory and Elaine (Latte) Mazzatti of Utica and Mrs. Robert (Cecelia) (Ventimiglia) Mazzatti of Frankfort; grandchildren, Mark and Susan Mazzatti, Diane and Tim Brooks, Elizabeth and Jim Plaskocinski, Mary Christine Mazzatti and Pamela Mazzatti, Robert and Jennifer Mazzatti, Jacquelyn and Ted Wilkinson, Gregory Jr. and Tammy Mazzatti, Rebecca Sibilia, and Christopher Mazzatti; great grandchildren, Troy, Jacob, Marcus, Megan, Nicole, Jacob, Gregory, Lorenzo and Giovanni; also surviving is his brother, Paul Mazzatti; two sisters-in-law, Nellie Mazzatti and Rose Gentile; and also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Robert Mazzatti; three brothers, Joseph, Frank and Anthony Mazzatti; and two sisters, Theresa Mazzatti and Carmela Mancuso. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 9:30 am at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum. Relatives and friends may call on Friday from 4-7 pm at The Matt Funeral Home 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St. in Utica.
