Vera M. Mills, 62, passed away peacefully, at home, on Saturday, September 26, 2020. When God allowed Gabriel to blow his horn, Vera answered the call.
Vera was born in Newton, GA, September 15, 1958, a daughter of the late James and Mildred (Bouie) Mills. During her stay in Utica, Vera attended Miller Elementary School and shortly thereafter, the family moved to Waterbury, Connecticut. In Waterbury, Vera attended Wallace Middle School, where she developed a love for dance. During her years at Crosby High School, she became a member of PRIDE Cultural Center. In 1989, she became Miss Waterbury and gained employment for PRIDE as a ballet instructor. On March 17, 1992, she gave birth to her son, Andre, and affectionately referred to him as “Sunshine” or “Dre”.
Due to sickness and life conditions, she returned to Utica. Her last days where spent loving her grandchildren and having seafood birthday bashes with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, James L. Mills, Jr. and Jerry L. Mills; and her sister, Margaret Evans. She is survived by her son, Andre Mills; grandchildren, Andre Mills Jr., Jayden Ward-Mills, and a new arrival to come; sisters, Myrtis and Fred Winston, Lillie and Frank Shackleford, Myrtle Shorter, Peggy Reynolds, and Lisa Mills; brothers, Robert Mills, Michael Mills, John and Katrina Mills, Joseph and Tatecha Mills, Willie and Sonya Mills; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and loved ones.
Vera’s family will have prayer services on Saturday, October 3, 2020 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St., Utica. Vera will be buried privately at Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica.
The funeral home is operating at a limit capacity. CDC and NYS guidelines will be in effect with face masks, social distancing and attendance registry required for all attendees.
